The Nasarawa state government has commenced aggressive sensitization campaign across the 13 local government areas of the state, as part of the measures to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
The state Commissioner for information Culture and Tourism Mr. Dogo Shammah made this known Thursday, shortly after the second meeting of the Communication and Awareness Sub-Committee on the control and containment of COVID-19, held in Lafia.
Shammah, who doubles as the chairman of the committee said the committee comprising of representatives of religious leaders, media, traditional rulers, ministry of health, non-governmental organizations (NGO) is vested with the responsibility of creating awareness and enlightening the general public on the dangers of COVID-19 and how to protect themselves from contracting the virus.
He disclosed that the government has approved the composition of the Committee in furtherance of the desire of the present administration’s quest to ensure safety of the people.
The information commissioner stated that the Committee would be responsible for developing effective ways and strategies of communicating the COVID-19 protocols and guidelines through mainstream media, new media, as well as traditional ways of communication to people living in rural areas.
“The state government believe effective aggressive sensitisation on the pandemic, from the urban to the grassroot level across the 13 Local Governments of the state would go a long way to stop the spread of the virus, “he said.
Shammah expressed concern over low compliance to COVID-19 protocol in the state, urging the public to complement government effort by adhering strictly to the COVID-19 safety guidelines.
He warned that motorists, tricyclists as well as motorcycle operators who fail to wear face mask will be sanctioned if caught.
