A member of Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr Olasunkanmi Babalola, on Wednesday, urged lawmakers across the country to embark on aggressive sensitisation on COVID-19 in their respective constituencies.
Babalola told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan that with the high rate of persons infected with the virus, enlightenment needed to be taken, even to the grassroots.
“We are at a point where all hands must be on deck to flatten the curve and narrow down the spread of COVID-19.
“ I want my fellow colleagues across the 36 states of the country to contribute their quota towards putting an end to this pandemic.
“I know that each lawmaker knows how to address the people of his/her constituency and I believe that they will listen. We need to use all the tactics at our disposal at this period in order to put an end to this menace.
“We need to engage in massive sensitisation campaign, reminding our constituents of the need to take preventive measures, such as wearing of face masks, using hand sanitiser, keeping social distance and avoiding large gatherings.
“This sensitisation can be done through print media, social media and personal contacts.
“Giving hygiene lectures to students and young people on regular hand washing and cleanliness is also key, as it has been discovered that the second wave of COVID-19 is dominant amongst this age group,” he said.
The lawmaker, representing Egbeda constituency, said that provision of hand washing basins in strategic areas in each constituency was also very pivotal.
“Distribution of face masks to schools across my constituency is underway and I want to implore my colleagues to do so too.
“ I am also encouraging health workers and distributing personal protective equipment (PPE) to primary health care centres across the constituency in order to contain the spread of the virus, as they are always in first contact with sick persons,” he said. (NAN)
