An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ibadan, on Friday, remanded one Anthony Godwin, 26, at the Abolongo Correctional Centre in Oyo, over alleged rape.
The Magistrate, Mrs Munirat Giwa – Babalola, who did not take the defendant’s plea because the court lacks jurisdiction to hear the case, ordered the defendant’s remand pending legal advice from office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution.
Babalola subsequently adjourned the case until Feb. 14, 2022, for mention.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendant whose address was not provided is facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, rape and armed robbery.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Oluseye Akinola told the court that Godwin and others at large conspired together to commit the offences.
Akinola said, “on Nov. 8, at about 5.45 a. m. on IAR & T, Apata, Ibadan , Godwin was alleged to have had carnal knowledge of a 24-year-old woman unlawfully without her consent
`The defendant, who was armed with knife, and others at large, allegedly robbed the victim of the sum of N5, 000 after raping her,’’
The prosecutor said that the offences allegedly committed contravened Section 1 (2) (a), (b) and 6b of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap RII, Vol. 14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
Akinola said the offences also contravened Section 357 and was punishable under Sections 358 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State 2000.(NAN)
