Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets suffered a 3-2 defeat to Tanzania in their opening match at the four-nation China International Youth Football Tournament on Sunday.
Tanzania made a flying start to the contest, racing into a two-goal lead before halftime through strikes from Issa Chole and Hamisi Chenga.
The Golden Eaglets responded positively after the restart, pulling one back following a sustained spell of pressure to give themselves hope of a comeback.
However, the East Africans quickly regained their two-goal cushion when Kassim Juma fired home a superb effort to make it 3-1.
Nigeria reduced the deficit again a few minutes later, but Uwejamomere Eboboritse’s side could not find the equaliser as Tanzania held on to claim all three points.
The five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champions will now shift their focus to Wednesday’s clash against Australia, where they will be aiming to record their first victory of the tournament.
The invitational competition forms part of the Golden Eaglets’ build-up to the WAFU B U-17 Championship in September, which doubles as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.
