When you think of the most prestigious gathering of African movie stars, directors, producers and script writers, you are definitely thinking of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA). AMAA, an annual awards event for creative minds within the African continent, has become the center stage for the recognition of talents and professionalism in the Africa film industry over the years.
This year’s edition is to be hosted in Lagos as part of the city’s 50th year anniversary.
This presents an opportunity for you to hit the red carpets, show the rest of Africa and the world the beautiful colors of Lagos as she crowns her 50thanniversary celebrations with the AMAA in a gathering of Africa’s finest movie talents.
The success of the #AMAA awards ceremony since its inception thirteen years ago speaks in a glaring way. The awards ceremony, which has toured several focal cities in Africa in the past, will light up the city of Lagos, bringing together only the very best of African movie stars.
Last year’s edition, #AMAA2016, staged in the city of Port Harcourt and treasure base of Nigeria, left the city agog leaving memories that outlives the glamour of the event.
The event set to hold at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, will come alive on 15th July 2017 as preparations are in top gear by the AMAA team to have memorable event of all time.
In its usual fashion, the event nominations, spotlighting the greatest contributors and those whose stardom added color and vigor to the African movie industry takes place in a different city other than the actual host city for the year’s event.
This year’s nominations ceremony was held in Kigali, Rwanda.
A total of 136 movies were nominated. Nollywood, the name coined for the Nigerian movie industry got 43 movie nominations. By so doing, Nollywood stakes its claim as the highest producer of movies in Africa.
’93 Days,’ is the movie with the highest nominations, contesting to be awarded in 7 different categories.
‘93 Days’ is a 2016 Nigerian drama thriller movie, jointly produced by Native FilmWorks, Michel Angelo Production, and Bolanle Austen-Peters Production.
Directed by Steve Gukas, it stars veteran Nollywood actors Bimbo Akintola, Danny Clover, and Bob Manuel. The movie is dedicated to Ameyo Adadevoh, a Nigerian physician who played a key role in the containment of Ebola in Nigeria.
The Lagos State Government at #AMAA2017 sponsors event held earlier in Lagos, reiterated its commitment to the successful hosting of the event by calling on corporate bodies to back the success of the event with their sponsorship.
Speaking at the Sponsors event, the founder of AMAA, Ms. Anyiam-Osigwe, highlighted the acceptability the event had received from the world over, when she announced that Disney Studios had submitted four movie for award consideration at the event gala.
A countdown to the event has already started. On June 23, the Twitter hashtag #AMAALagosIcons trended as the event organizers and followers galvanized momentum for the gala by acknowledging icons of the African movie industry.
This is the first time Lagos will host the #AMAA awards ceremony. It is expected to be a mind-blowing edition. Lagos is undoubtedly the economic hub of Africa, entertainment, which the movie industry is a part of, is this big in Africa owing to the contributions Lagos as a city has on it.
While the event will not be shy of celebrities, politicians, media representatives, actors, actresses, and stakeholders both in Africa and in the diasporas, the organizers have equally created space for the fans to feel their stars by making some tickets available for purchase.
