Thousands of jubilant supporters thronged the streets of Praia and packed the city’s international airport on Sunday to welcome home Cape Verde’s national team, the Blue Sharks, after their historic run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Prompt News Online reports.
The Blue Sharks returned to a heroes’ welcome despite their heartbreaking 3-2 extra-time defeat to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32, a result that capped one of the tournament’s most memorable underdog stories.
Players and officials were greeted by cheering crowds waving national flags and banners, while patriotic songs echoed through the capital as fans celebrated a team that exceeded all expectations on its World Cup debut.
The squad was set to embark on an open-top parade through Praia before meeting President José Maria Neves and other senior government officials in recognition of their remarkable achievement.
Cape Verde captured global attention by reaching the knockout stage in their maiden World Cup appearance, producing a string of fearless displays that earned admiration well beyond the island nation.
Their fairytale journey ended in Miami, where they pushed Lionel Messi’s Argentina to extra time before eventually falling 3-2 in a gripping Round of 32 contest.
The emotional homecoming coincided with Cape Verde’s 51st Independence Day celebrations, making the occasion even more symbolic for the nation.
“After the heroes who fought for our independence, we now have these heroes, the Blue Sharks,” 28-year-old supporter Edmilson Correia told AFP as thousands gathered at the airport to welcome the team.
Head coach Pedro Leitão Brito, popularly known as Bubista, said the Blue Sharks had proved they belonged on football’s biggest stage.
“We showed that our qualification for the World Cup was no accident,” Bubista said after arriving in Praia. “Our players displayed hard work, determination and resilience throughout the tournament, and we return home with our heads held high.”
