A 50-year-old businessman, Matthew Adeniyi, was on Wednesday docked in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 23 tonnes of soya beans worth N4million.
Adeniyi, lives in Sango Otta, Ogun State is charged with theft.
The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Raji Akeem, told the court that the offence was committed between Nov. 27, 2021 and Dec. 4, 2021 at 30, Bourdilon Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Akeem said that the defendant was asked to supply 90 tonnes of Soya beans and N16.5million was paid to his account for the supply by the complainant, ROM Oil.
The prosecutor said that the defendant supplied 67 tonnes and failed to supply the remaining 23 tonnes which is N4million.
Akeem said all efforts to see the defendant failed as he moved out of his house to an unknown place.
The prosecutor said that the case was reported at the police station and since then ,the police have been on the look out for the defendant.
The offence according to the prosecutor contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B. O Osunsanmi, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in likesum.
Osunsanmi adjourned the case until March 9 for mention. (NAN)
