A multi-storey building under construction collapsed early Saturday on Oremeta Street in the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos State, leaving an unknown number of people trapped beneath the rubble.
The structure, which also housed the popular EqualRight Restaurant, gave way around 8 a.m., catching both occupants and passersby off guard. Witnesses described the collapse as sudden and alarming.
One eyewitness, speaking anonymously to PUNCH Online, described the building as structurally unsound and said the collapse was long anticipated. “Anyone who knows that building knows it was a bomb waiting to explode.
I rarely went there to buy food because I was afraid it would collapse while I was inside,” the source said.
Although the exact number of those trapped remains unknown, emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) have arrived and commenced rescue operations.
More government agencies are expected to join the effort.
As rescue operations continue, a crowd of concerned residents and onlookers has gathered at the scene, awaiting further updates.
