The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has expressed its readiness to partner with Nigerian Institute of Building to tackle quackery in the profession to check building collapse.
Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, the Speaker of the House, stated this while playing host to members of Nigerian Institute of Building, Nasarawa State Chapter, on a courtesy visit on Tuesday in Lafia.
The speaker said that unprofessional practices by some builders had claimed lives of many Nigerians and had affected the socio-economic development of the country.
“I want to appreciate you for the visit and to assure you of our readiness to partner with you to take the state to the next level of development.
“I have heard your submission. First, I want to sympathise with Nigerians that have lost their lives as a result of building collapse in Lagos and some parts of the country.
“We are deeply sad at the rate of building collapse as you said that more than 100 Nigerians lost their lives recently.
“This is a huge loss to Nigerians . As legislators, we will make a law that will address this issue for the overall development of the state and the country at large” he said.
The speaker urged the members of the association to continue to be professionals at all times to tackle building collapse in the country.
Earlier, the chairman of the association, Mr Titus Mathew-Osabo, represented by Dr Ibrahim Ogiri-Hassan, an ex-officio, said that they were at the house to seek for the assembly’s support in the area of legislation to tackle building collapse.
“We are here to seek for your support as there is the need for strong policy formulation to tackle building collapse.
“March 13 of every year is set aside to commemorate the National Building day to sympathise with those that have lost their lives as a result of building collapse,” he said.
The members of the institute presented a draft bill proposal that will regulate their activities and curtail building collapse to the speaker for consideration and necessary action.(NAN)
