Tension erupted in Benue State on Tuesday after suspected thugs allegedly blocked a major road shortly after the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, arrived in the state.
The incident reportedly occurred along the Boko Road by the Air Force Base, where Obi’s convoy was said to have encountered the obstruction.
Obi’s media aide, Esther Umoh, raised the alarm in a post on X, alleging that the roadblock was deliberately organised to prevent the former Anambra State governor from gaining access into the state.
According to her, Obi and members of his entourage had just arrived in Benue when the alleged incident occurred.
She wrote that “alleged sponsored thugs” had blocked the route and were attempting to stop the presidential hopeful from proceeding with his movement.
In another video shared by the aide, several individuals were seen running towards vehicles in the convoy. Umoh alleged that the individuals were attempting to attack members of the entourage.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
It was also not immediately established who the individuals seen in the video were or what led to the confrontation.

Neither the Benue State Government nor the state police command had issued an official statement on the allegation as of press time.
