The Federal Government has announced Friday, June 12, 2026, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on Thursday.
The government described June 12 as a landmark date in Nigeria’s democratic history, recognising the sacrifices and determination of citizens who contributed to the country’s democratic evolution.
According to the statement, the occasion serves as a reminder of the struggles that strengthened democratic governance and helped shape the nation’s political landscape.
Tunji-Ojo noted that the enduring legacy of pro-democracy heroes continues to inspire the values of justice, accountability, transparency and responsible leadership in the country.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening democratic institutions and promoting inclusive governance anchored on the rule of law.
The minister also urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and renew their commitment to national unity, peace and sustainable development.
Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 to honour the historic struggle for democratic rule and celebrate the progress made in Nigeria’s democratic experience.
