The Benue State Government said on Tuesday in Makurdi that it has resolved to review sanitation laws to improve environment sanitation.
The General Manager(GM), Benue State Environmental Sanitation Agency (BENSESA), Jennifer Nashima, disclosed this in Makurdi that all sanitation defaulters would be adequately sanctioned.
Nashima said the government was working round the clock to review the sanitation laws to make them more effective.
The general manager said the agency would enforce environmental sanitation laws for an improved clean environment.
She stated BENSESA would also continue to ensure that Benue people practice regular clean-up of their environment instead of waiting for the end of a month to do so.
“On resumption of my appointment as General Manager of BENSESA, I met a dead system.
“What I mean dead, I mean we had moribund trucks that broke down for a number of years, some eight years, some five years, some two years, and some months.
“There was no functional truck for service delivery as of the time I took over.
“We are going to go down hard on the offenders, people who have deliberately refused to adhere to sanitation laws in the state.
“We will be employing and using all that it takes to ensure that people comply,” she added.
Nashima commended the state governor for releasing funds for the refurbishment of the trucks, which she said were currently being fixed.
According to her, five of the trucks were already up and functional.
She restated Gov. Hyacinth Alia’s administration vision for a cleaner and safer environment for Benue people.
The GM pointed out that the agency had already commenced sensitisation and inspection of premises to ensure that people comply with environmental sanitation laws.
She promised to replicate whatever is happening in Makurdi town in the 22 local government areas.
The agency’s boss promised to designate roll-on bins in busy areas where the trucks cannot move easily and also provide public mobile toilets to curb open defecation and open urination.
She thanked Alia for standing firm to ensure that BENSESA was remodelled and equipped for optimal service delivery. (NAN).
