The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has directed indigenes and residents of Edo State to observe a two-week fasting and prayer period aimed at protecting the land from misfortune and ensuring peace.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Obamedo of Benin, Efosa Igbinomwanhia. The monarch said the exercise would run from September 15 to September 28, urging all Benin sons and daughters, both at home and in the diaspora, to join in the spiritual observance.
According to the palace, the fast will hold daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. In line with tradition, the annual rite is observed before the commencement of the new yam festival to seek divine favour, abundant harvest, and protection from untimely death.
“His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of Benin, calls on all indigenes and non-indigenes residing in Edo State to embark on fasting and prayers during the specified period,” the statement read in part.
