Bandits have reportedly killed residents, set harvested rice on fire and abducted five people during an attack on Farin Ruwa community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The incident was disclosed on Wednesday by security analyst Bakatsine in a post highlighting the growing hardship faced by farmers in the community.
According to the analyst, the gunmen had been demanding huge sums of money from farmers before allowing them to harvest their crops, worsening the plight of residents who depend on farming for survival.
“Residents of Farin Ruwa, Maru LGA, Zamfara State, are facing another painful reality as bandits reportedly demand huge sums of money from farmers before allowing them to harvest their crop,” Bakatsine wrote.
The attackers reportedly invaded the community, killed some residents, abducted others and destroyed harvested rice by setting piles of the produce ablaze.
One of the victims, identified as Saminu Adamu, was reportedly killed despite his family having paid a ransom to secure his release.
The attackers also allegedly destroyed his farm produce, compounding the losses suffered by his family.
Five other residents were said to remain in the custody of the gunmen. They were identified as Abdulrahman Shehu, Mansur Muhammad, Idi Muhammad, Abdullahi Sani and Sani Usman.
The attack has raised fresh concerns about the safety of farmers in rural communities, where insecurity continues to threaten agricultural activities and food supplies.
Expressing concern over the situation, Bakatsine questioned how farmers could provide for their families when they were unable to harvest their crops safely.
“How can farmers feed their families when they cannot safely harvest what they planted, and how much longer must these communities endure this suffering before help arrives?” the analyst asked.
