Ten security operatives have been killed in an ambush by bandits in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The victims include six members of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards (CPG), also known as Askarawa, and four local vigilantes (Yan Sakai).
The attack occurred on Saturday as security forces were returning from a successful joint operation with the Nigerian Army in Sunke Forest.
The operation had led to the neutralization of several bandits and the recovery of weapons.
However, as the team made its way back, it was ambushed near the Bagega axis.
The gunmen opened fire, killing ten operatives. Three others—two CPG members and one vigilante—remain missing.
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal confirmed the incident in a statement shared on his official Facebook page.
He expressed deep sorrow over the loss and described the event as heartbreaking.
He also noted that the victims had been buried on Sunday morning.
The governor ordered immediate medical support for the injured and relief for the families of the deceased.
He also prayed for peace and an end to the insecurity troubling the state and the country.
Zamfara remains one of the states most affected by banditry in Nigeria’s northwest and north-central regions.
