President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the appointment of the immediate past national chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bamanga Tukur as the chairman of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
Mr. Tukur was compelled to resign from his plum position last week Wednesday following lingering internal crisis that has engulfed the party for months now.
He replaces former acting national chairman of the party, Abubakar Kawu Baraje who has joined the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
Baraje resigned as NRC chairman in November 2013, following his defection to APC, saying he had lost confidence in the ruling party.
The President also approved the appointment of Dr Ghaji Ismaila Bello as the Director-General of the National Population Commission (NPC).
A terse statement announcing the two appointment from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation reads, “His Excellence, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has approved the following appointments:
(i) Alhaji Bamanga Tukur – as Chairman, Nigerian Railway Corporation.
(ii) Dr. Ghaji Ismaila Bello – as Director-General, National Population Commission with effect from January 8th, 2014.
