The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko branch, has said it will not suspend its ongoing strike until the Ondo State Government implements the agreement reached with the union.
The branch Chairman, Prof. Boluwaji Oshodi, disclosed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Akure on Tuesday.
The development comes as academic and non-academic unions in the three state-owned universities continue their total and indefinite strike over unpaid allowances and other outstanding entitlements.
The Ondo State Government had announced on Monday that it had reached an agreement with the striking unions on the implementation of the Federal Government and union agreement.
Oshodi confirmed that the government and the union leadership had reached an agreement but said the development alone was not enough to bring the industrial action to an end.
He said the union welcomed the government’s approval of the agreement but was waiting for its actual implementation before considering the suspension of the strike.
“The state government and the union have reached an agreement on the implementation of the FGN-Union agreement.
“However, we are still waiting for the implementation. That is when the strike will be called off,” Oshodi told NAN.
The ASUU-AAUA chairman’s position means academic activities at the institution will remain suspended pending the fulfilment of the terms agreed upon by the government and the unions.
The unions’ industrial action has affected the operations of the three state-owned universities as members demand the payment and implementation of outstanding allowances and agreements.
