The Nigerian Army on Wednesday interred Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail and other troops slain during a coordinated insurgent attack in Borno State, underscoring the growing toll of the protracted counter-insurgency war in the North-East.
The fallen officers and soldiers were laid to rest with full military honours at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri amid grief and solemn tributes from top government and military officials.
The casualties were recorded on April 9 when suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters launched simultaneous assaults on military formations in Benisheikh, a strategic community in Kaga Local Government Area along the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Army described the burial as a sombre ceremony attended by families, colleagues and senior officials, reflecting the deepening human cost of ongoing security operations.
It noted that the deceased personnel were honoured for their bravery and commitment to duty, having “paid the supreme price” in defence of the nation’s sovereignty.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum; the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa; and other senior officers were present at the ceremony, where they paid glowing tributes to the slain troops.
They hailed the deceased as courageous patriots whose sacrifices would not be forgotten, even as prayers were offered for the repose of their souls.
Military authorities said citations highlighting the service records of the fallen soldiers were read in the presence of their families, describing their deaths as a painful reminder of the daily risks faced by personnel on the frontlines.
