Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua was hospitalised on Monday following a road collision on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in the Makun area of Ogun State, the state police public relations officer has confirmed.
In a statement made available to PUNCH Online, CSP Oluseyi Babaseyi said the crash occurred shortly after 11:00am along the Ibadan-bound carriageway, just before the Danco filling station and ahead of the Sagamu interchange.
An on-scene reporter and eyewitnesses said the boxer was travelling in a Lexus SUV bearing registration number KRD 850 HN when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck. Those at the scene said Joshua sustained minor injuries while two other occupants of the Lexus were pronounced dead at the scene.
A witness, Adeniyi Orojo, who was among those involved in the immediate rescue effort, recounted the sequence of events and the response by passersby and emergency crews.
“It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. A passenger sat beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail followed in the vehicle behind.
“Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles for help. Minutes after the crash, Federal Road Safety Corps officials arrived. The passenger beside the driver and the person beside Joshua died on the spot,” he said.
Confirming that the injured had been taken to hospital, the Ogun State Police spokesman said in a statement: “The Ogun State Police Command confirms a road accident today in front of Sinoma, before Danco, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Anthony Joshua and other injured persons have been rushed to the hospital.
“Further updates will be communicated.”
Traffic at the scene was disrupted as emergency responders and traffic officials worked to clear wreckage and assist victims. The identities of the deceased have not been released, and the hospital receiving the injured was not disclosed at the time of filing.
