The Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement, Afenifere described Kanu as a political detainee, condemning his ongoing detention as unjustifiable.
The group urged President Tinubu to take prompt action to secure Kanu’s release.
The call was made in a communiqué signed by Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, following a meeting held at the residence of Afenifere leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo in Isanya Ogbo.
The communiqué emphasized that Kanu’s detention, especially after his abduction in 2021 and controversial legal proceedings in various courts, clearly marks him as a political prisoner.
The statement argued that Kanu’s right to a fair trial has been compromised, a view shared by many.
“Afenifere urges President Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu without delay, as there is no justifiable reason to keep him in detention without trial. This is crucial for justice and national reconciliation,” the communiqué read.
The group also announced the appointment of Barrister Dele Farotimi as the new National Organizing Secretary.
Afenifere further expressed concerns over the persistent insecurity in the country, which it noted has continued from the previous administration.
It called on President Tinubu to take bold and ideological measures to protect citizens’ lives and property.
Highlighting a recent warning from Governor Seyi Makinde about the rising threat of bandits, Afenifere reiterated its call for restructuring.
“Nigeria, with its large size and population, cannot be effectively secured with a single-command police structure. We need to restructure the country and institutionalize state police,” the statement added.
The meeting was attended by key figures from the South West, Kogi, and Kwara states, including former Lagos State Deputy Governor Senator Kofoworola Bucknor Akerele, Secretary General Chief Sola Ebiseni, and National Publicity Secretary Prince Justice Faloye, among others.
