The erstwhile National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bamanga Tukur paid a farewell visit to President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House Wednesday evening, apparently to formally inform him of his resignation.
The National Working Committee (NWC) earlier held a meeting that was presided over by the National Deputy Chairman, Uche Secondus at the party’s Wadata House headquarters. Mr. Tukur was absent.
Prior to the reconvening of the National Caucus meeting at 6.00 pm, President Jonathan held a closed door session with PDP governors with only Vice President Namadi Sambo in attendance.
Meanwhile, Governors Babangida Aliyu of Niger and Sule Lamido of Jigawa were again absent.
The caucus meeting which lasted barely 30 minutes apparently ratified the resignation of Mr. Tukur who was absent.
However, none of the party stalwarts that attended the caucus meeting offered to speak with State House correspondents.
The meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled to hold at 8.00 pm.
At an emergency meeting of the PDP National Caucus held on Tuesday night at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, party stalwarts were said to have bluntly asked Mr. to resign so that the party could chart a new way forward ahead of the 2015 general election.
The caucus meeting was presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan and attended by Vice President Namadi Sambo, Senate Presoident David Mark, Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, Bamanga Tukur and his National Working Committee (NWC) members.
However, before the meeting adjourned to reconvene on Wednesday, Mr. Tukur agreed to turn in his resignation letter.
Bamanga Tukur, a favoured candidate of President Jonathan emerged the national chairman of the PDP at a national convention of the party held at Eagles Square, Abuja, on March 24, 2012.
He was a former Governor of old Gongola state and former Minister of Industry.
