By: Gracious Akujobi Director General of the National Sports Commission, Gbenga Elegbeleye is delighted that the Golden Eaglets have qualified for the semi-final of the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
The Eaglets had last Saturday defeated Uruguay by 2-0 through goals from Taiwo Awoniyi in the 19thand 79th minutes at the Sharjah Stadium in Sharjah. The Eaglets have thus booked another date with Sweden on Tuesday.
Elegbeleye, who was speaking shortly after the impressive match charged them not to only beat Sweden in the last four encounter, but to ensure that they win the trophy on Friday, November 8th 2013 in Abu Dhabi.
The Director-General also admonished the Eaglets not to be carried away with the euphoria of the win but to work harder so as to realize their ambition of getting a record fourth title to add to the ones won in 1985, 1993 and 2007 in China, Japan and Korea Republic respectively.
His words, “The Golden Eaglets team has been growing from strength to strength since the commencement of the competition and all sports loving Nigerians are happy with the zeal, passion, dedication and commitment they have displayed so far and that have catapulted them to the semifinal of the competition.
“We are confident of the ability of the boys to deliver the trophy to His Excellency President Goodluck Jonathan at the end of the competition”.
