Ungwar Galadima community in Lafia local government area of Nasarawa state has descried the devastating effect of Gully erosion in the area which has claimed lives and properties at different occasion.
The community leader, Mohammed Jibrin Mamman Ladi, who is also the Galadiman Lafia on Wednesday described the menace caused by the erosion as unfortunate; calling on the government to intervene by completing the abandoned drainage system project.
According to him “all water channels in the Lafia metropolitan run to the Amba rivers constituting a serious water lodge around our houses in Ungwar Gadadima and is causing a serious accident and unfair to us.”
He added that Ungwar Galadima is an ancient and historical settlement in the capital city which was amongst the five founders of the Lafia Emirates council as the “Musa Gana Dynasty “since 1804.
He also said it was the first, second and third Madakin Lafia (the Prime Minister ) as well as the fifth Emir of Lafia, lamenting that they have been exposed to setbacks in all remifications.
“I call on the people’s governor (Al-makura ) to come to the aide of the community by tackling the erosion menace to avert further destruction.
Lives were lost at different occasion forcing residents to relocate from their ancestral homes and so many of us have no any place to go than to stay,” the community leader added.
Also speaking the chief Imam of Ungwar Galadima Kasimu Saeed Ali Galadima, advised the governor not to stay from far at Kofan Zanwa to access the erosion.
“Let the governor please come through Ungwar Galadima inside late Ali Galadima’s residence that will be better for him to see what we are really talking about.and I am so optimistic that Almakura can do that for us.
“You see last year a family was completely leveled down by this gully erosion up to this moment we could not found their dead bodies.
” We are scared we do not know what would happen next and we have no place to go, few among us left because they have the means,” the Imam added.
Speaking to newsmen in Lafia on the erosion development in Ungwar Galadima, the Nasarawa state commissioner for Environment and Mineral resources Gebrial Akaaka opined that government was already aware of the issue and measures have been put in place to addresses the menace
It could be recalled that sometimes last year, Governor Umaru Almakura during a working visit to some areas affected by erosion said government has made frantic effort in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment for the release of Ecology aid to tackle erosion menace in the state.
