The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a senior officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Onoja Samuel, for allegedly firing gunshots during a confrontation with traders at a market in Kubwa, Abuja.
Samuel, a Deputy Superintendent of Corps, reportedly went to the market armed with a pistol after learning that some traders had allegedly assaulted his wife.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, adding that the officer was arrested after police operatives disarmed him.
Adeh said the police received a distress call at about 1:50 pm on October 25, 2026, reporting that a man armed with a pistol was shooting sporadically into the air at the market.
She said operatives attached to the Kubwa Police Division were immediately deployed to the scene, where they apprehended the suspect.
“Preliminary investigations identified the suspect as one Onoja Samuel, a Deputy Superintendent of Corps with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
“Further findings revealed that the suspect had gone to the market armed with a pistol following reports that some traders had assaulted his wife.
During an ensuing argument with the traders, he fired several shots into the air,” the statement partly read.
The police spokesperson added that a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition were recovered from the suspect.
She said Samuel remained in police custody and would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Ahmed Sanusi, urged personnel of other security agencies to exercise restraint and coordinate with the police when carrying out authorised operations within the territory.
