The police in Cross River State have taken two siblings into custody over the alleged murder of their 46-year-old stepbrother, Bassey Ibiang, in Yakurr Local Government Area.

The suspects were reportedly involved in an attack on the deceased following an accusation of theft, which allegedly escalated into a fatal assault.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident in a statement released in Calabar on Monday.

According to him, the police received information about the incident on Sunday, with preliminary reports indicating that the victim was restrained before being attacked with a machete.

Eitokpah said the suspects allegedly bound Ibiang’s hands and legs before inflicting a severe injury to his head.

He added that the victim was rushed to Ugep General Hospital after the attack, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The police subsequently arrested the two suspects and began investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal incident.

The command said its operatives had visited the scene as part of efforts to gather evidence and establish the facts surrounding the alleged killing.
