Why Public Relations Matters in My Life, By Afolabi Olajuwon

Public relations is more than my profession; it is a defining part of my life’s journey. It has shaped the way I communicate, strengthened the way I relate with people, and deepened my understanding of leadership, service and society. Through public relations, I have learned that words are never merely spoken or written, they carry meaning, shape perception, build relationships and sometimes change the course of human events.

To me, public relations is the art of bringing clarity where confusion exists, understanding where suspicion prevails, and harmony where relationships have become strained. It gives institutions a human voice and gives people the confidence that they are being seen, heard and valued. It is not simply about managing appearances; it is about managing relationships with truth, wisdom and responsibility.

My experience in public service has made this conviction even stronger. I have witnessed sound policies misunderstood because they were poorly communicated. I have also seen difficult decisions receive public understanding when they were explained honestly, patiently and with empathy.

These experiences have taught me that leadership may possess vision, but communication gives that vision visibility. Policy may contain good intentions, but public relations helps society understand its purpose, relevance and impact.

That is why I often describe public relations through these poetic expressions:
Like sunlight breaking through the clouds,it clarifies the hazy view,it takes the fragments of my lifeand paints them vibrant, bold, and true.

Like sunlight breaking through the clouds, public relations has illuminated my path. It has helped me discover the power of purposeful communication and the responsibility that accompanies it. Sunlight does not create what lies beneath the clouds; it simply reveals it. In the same way, ethical public relations does not manufacture reality. It brings truth into the open, provides context and enables people to see more clearly.

It “clarifies the hazy view” because misunderstanding is often born in the absence of credible information. Whenever truth is delayed, rumours become impatient. Whenever institutions remain silent, speculation supplies its own explanation. Public relations therefore teaches me that silence is rarely neutral. In moments of uncertainty, timely, transparent and compassionate communication can prevent fear from becoming falsehood and disagreement from becoming distrust.
Public relations has also taken “the fragments of my life” and given them coherence. My experiences in writing, public administration, media relations, teaching, leadership and community service may appear to be separate responsibilities, but communication connects them. Each encounter has taught me something about human dignity. Each challenge has sharpened my judgement. Each assignment has reminded me that communication is ultimately about people, not merely audiences, statistics or headlines.

It has taught me to listen before speaking, to understand before responding and to consider the human consequences of every message. Listening is perhaps the most neglected element of communication, yet it is one of its greatest forms of wisdom. People may forget the elegance of our speeches, but they rarely forget whether we listened to them with respect.

The profession has equally taught me that reputation cannot be sustained by publicity alone. Publicity may attract attention, but character earns confidence. Image may open a door, but integrity determines how long that door remains open. A good reputation is therefore not a costume worn before the public; it is the outward reflection of inward values consistently demonstrated over time.

This understanding has influenced how I approach leadership. I believe communication must never be used to decorate failure, conceal wrongdoing or manipulate public emotion. Its nobler purpose is to connect promises with performance, leadership with accountability, and institutions with the people they exist to serve. The finest public relations practitioner is not merely a skilled messenger, but also a custodian of trust and a courageous adviser who is willing to tell leaders the truth.

Public relations has painted my journey “vibrant, bold, and true.” It has given me the confidence to contribute to national conversations, mentor younger practitioners, communicate institutional priorities and advocate professionalism founded on ethics. It has shown me that a carefully chosen word can restore hope, a sincere apology can repair a damaged relationship, and an honest explanation can rebuild confidence.

Most importantly, public relations has taught me that credibility is accumulated in drops but can be lost in buckets. Every message, decision and relationship either deposits something into the account of trust or withdraws from it. Wisdom therefore demands that we communicate not only for immediate applause but also for enduring respect.

Why, then, does public relations matter in my life?
It matters because it enables me to serve. It helps me transform information into understanding, policies into relatable narratives and official responsibilities into opportunities for human connection. It reminds me that communication without truth is manipulation, visibility without value is vanity, and reputation without character is an empty promise.

Public relations matters in my life because it has become both my vocation and my philosophy, a commitment to clarity, credibility and constructive relationships. It has taught me that when truth is communicated with wisdom, and leadership listens with humility, communication becomes more than a professional function. It becomes sunlight: breaking through the clouds, clearing the haze, gathering life’s fragments and revealing a picture that is vibrant, bold and true.
