Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has advised parents to avoid overindulging their children, warning that excessive pampering could prevent them from developing into responsible and independent adults.
The actress shared her views while discussing parenting, wealth and inheritance, stressing the importance of allowing children to experience challenges and learn how to work towards achieving their goals.
Prompt News reports Ozokwor argued that parents who try to shield their children from every hardship they experienced while growing up could unintentionally make it difficult for them to cope with life.
“When you say, ‘I don’t want my children to suffer what I suffered when I was growing up’, you see, that’s the best way to destroy your children,” she said.
The actress, however, clarified that she was not encouraging parents to deliberately subject their children to suffering.
“I’m not saying allow them to suffer, what I’m saying is allow them to struggle. Go through the process.
“But when you pamper them, they don’t come out to be anything,” she said.
According to Ozokwor, children should be given the opportunity to understand the effort and sacrifices required to build a life for themselves rather than having everything provided for them.
She also addressed the issue of family wealth and inheritance, advising parents not to create an expectation that their children would automatically receive everything they had accumulated.

“Keep the things that you have and let them know that you go get yours, this is mine,” she added.
The actress revealed that she adopted the same principle when raising her own son. Rather than allowing him to assume that her property would automatically become his, she encouraged him to work towards owning a home himself.
Ozokwor said, “I told my son, my house isn’t yours, go and work for your own.”
