Why I Love Playing ‘Wicked’ Characters — Patience Ozokwo

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo, popularly known as Mama G, has explained why she became widely recognised for playing villainous and antagonistic characters throughout her career.

Ozokwo spoke during a livestreamed interview with content creator Carter Efe on Monday, where she reflected on her long career and the roles that helped establish her as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable actresses.

The interview generated significant reactions online, particularly after the actress discussed her frequent portrayal of “wicked” women in Nigerian movies.

According to Ozokwo, her reputation for playing such characters was not entirely the result of a deliberate career strategy, but what she believes was a niche given to her by God.

“I think God gave me that niche,” she said.

The actress explained that despite often portraying characters associated with evil and injustice, she personally dislikes such behaviour.

“I hate every ill because I don’t like injustice, war, and rancour. When you give me those roles, I try to bring everything in them,” she said.

Prompt News reports Ozokwo added that her approach to playing antagonists was also aimed at teaching audiences about the consequences of their actions.

“If you are taking part in any of them, you have to be careful and know the end thereof, for the end justifies the means. Know what will happen to you if you live a terrible life, and know what you will gain if you are a good person.”

The actress said her performances were intended to go beyond entertainment by highlighting the consequences of immoral choices.

She noted that portraying negative characters allowed her to communicate important lessons about good and bad behaviour, while encouraging viewers to consider the consequences of the paths they choose in life.

Ozokwo remains one of Nollywood’s most celebrated veteran actresses, with her portrayal of strict, intimidating and often villainous characters earning her the enduring nickname “Mama G.”
