British Should Have Stayed In Nigeria For 10 More Years – Kiddwaya

Reality TV personality Tersee Waya, popularly known as Kiddwaya, has stirred controversy after suggesting that Nigeria might have experienced greater development if British colonial rule had continued for another decade or more.

Nigeria gained independence from Britain in 1960 following years of nationalist agitation and political campaigns. The country later became a republic in 1963, formally ending its remaining constitutional ties with Britain.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s development since independence, Kiddwaya argued that the country may have benefited from a longer transition period under British rule.

Prompt News reports the former Big Brother Naija housemate shared the opinion in a post on X, writing, “Unpopular opinion. The British should have stayed in Nigeria for 10/15 more years. You go see better development.”

His comment quickly generated debate among social media users, with reactions divided over whether continued colonial rule would have improved Nigeria’s development.

Some users appeared to agree with Kiddwaya, arguing that Nigeria’s post-independence leadership and persistent governance challenges made his argument worthy of consideration.

Others, however, rejected the claim, maintaining that extending colonial rule would have given Britain more time to exploit Nigeria’s natural resources rather than prioritise the country’s long-term development.

The debate has once again sparked conversations about Nigeria’s colonial history, independence and the factors responsible for the country’s development trajectory since 1960.
