Barely eight months to the general election, the once ruling political party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not field candidates for the Presidential National Assembly and States Assembly elections.
This much was disclosed by a respected legal practitioner and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Magaji Mato, who also decried the none compliance of the Supreme Court of Nigeria’s judgment on the lingering crisis and factionalization of PDP.
Speaking on Friday on Arise News breakfast live television programme The Morning Show, Mato insists that the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court of Nigeria has clearly ruled that PDP has no leader after nullifying the Ibadan National Convention and striking out the Appeal of Turaki-led PDP and Cross-Appeal filed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu who is the arrow-head of Nyesom Ezenwo Wike faction of PDP.
According to him, the legal implications of the Supreme Court ruling are that PDP has no leader in the eyes of the law, pointing out that the only organ of the party that has the legal rights to put PDP back on track is the Board of Trustee (BoT), although he said that he does not know the rightful BoT as both factions lay claims to be the authentic PDP.
Mato argued that by the judgment of the Supreme Court, none of the two factions can lay claims to be the authentic PDP except the BoT of the party which he said can recognise and put structures of the leadership in place for it to function again.
On both factions selling forms for elective positions, Mato insists that the Independent National v Electoral Commission (INEC) can not deal with any of the factions, pointing out that if INEC goes ahead to do so, there will be a deluge of legal battles in the courts.
He however lamented over the disregard of Supreme Court judgments by Nigerian politicians, saying that this state of affairs does Nigeria no good.
