Suspected gunmen have killed the traditional ruler of Ishinkwor community in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, HRH Jesophat Ikegwu.
The monarch was reportedly attacked on Wednesday night at his palace, where the assailants allegedly shot him through a window.
Community sources disclosed that the attackers stormed the palace under unclear circumstances before carrying out the fatal assault, throwing residents into panic.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Onicha Local Government Area, Ikechukwu Ogbofia, condemned the killing and described it as a disturbing development.
He stated that security agencies, including the police, had commenced an investigation into the incident and urged residents to remain calm while efforts were underway to apprehend those responsible.
Also speaking, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State Command, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the attack, noting that the matter was being investigated.
Ikegwu’s killing has brought to five the number of traditional rulers reportedly murdered in the state in recent times.
In a similar incident last month, the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike community in Ikwo Local Government Area was killed after being abducted, with his body later found burnt.
