A coordinated security operation in Jigawa State has resulted in the arrest of three suspected highway robbers who allegedly lured unsuspecting victims into a foreign currency scam before dispossessing them of their valuables.
The suspects identified as Adamu Abubakar, 30; Sale Yakubu, 30; and Mamman Saidu, 17 were apprehended during a pre-dawn raid on January 10 at Bariki Fulani Settlement, Rugar Fulani and Kwangara village, all in Sundumina District of Birnin Kudu Local Government Area.
Spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday.
He explained that the operation, carried out at about 2am, pooled men from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and local vigilante groups.
Recovered from the suspects were a locally fabricated firearm, a knife and machete, two Boxer motorcycles, eight pieces of counterfeit 50,000 Somali shilling notes, five Tecno handsets, a power bank and N289,620 cash, suspected to be loot from recent attacks.
Preliminary investigations, according to the command, indicate that the trio specialised in duping victims through bogus currency exchange deals before resorting to armed violence.
