Award-winning Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has revealed the harsh realities that women in the music industry often face, including pressure to exchange sexual favours for career opportunities.
Speaking at a panel during Entertainment Week Africa, Savage recounted instances where she was told to personally meet influential male executives before being considered for certain performance slots.
She also shared how she lost out on a significant endorsement after refusing to accompany a company co-owner on a personal trip. The experience highlighted how some industry stakeholders valued her physical appeal more than her talent.
In her own words, “I had been told that if I don’t go and see ‘this chairman’ personally, I would not be put on a show. I lost an endorsement because I refused to go to Dubai with a man who is one of the owners of the company.”
