Temitope Iwute, a 32-year-old Nigerian woman, has tragically passed away during childbirth at Croydon University Hospital in London, leaving behind her newborn son.
Iwute had recently completed her Master’s degree at York St John University and was preparing for her convocation when the unfortunate incident occurred.
The Community of Nigerians in the UK (NIUK) broke the news on Monday via their official X (formerly Twitter) account, calling for financial support to assist her newborn son and fund her burial.
The statement read: “Dear NIUK Community, we’re reaching out with heavy hearts to support the family of Temitope Elizabeth Soneye Iwute, a vibrant 32-year-old who tragically passed away during childbirth, leaving behind her precious newborn son. Temitope had just completed her MSc at York St John University and was eagerly looking forward to her future. Now, we ask for your help to honour her memory and support her baby’s future.”
So far, £3,785 has been raised out of a £15,000 target, with contributions coming from 157 donors.
Mauren Elor, the campaign organiser, described Temitope as a kind and loving individual who radiated joy as she anticipated motherhood. She wrote: “Temitope was a devoted wife, cherished daughter, beloved sister, and a friend to many. She dreamed of holding her baby, singing lullabies, and sharing her boundless love. Her passing has left a deep void, and her baby will grow up without her tender care, soothing voice, and unconditional love.”
Elor further appealed for support to help ensure the baby has a stable future.
She stated, “Your donations will not only honour Temitope’s memory but also provide her child with the care and opportunities she would have wanted for him. Every contribution matters and will help give this baby a future filled with love, stability, and hope.”
The fundraiser continues to urge people to donate and share the campaign, with a goal of wrapping Temitope’s son in a “blanket of love” during this difficult time.
