Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his commitment to fostering a strong partnership between the Executive and Legislative arms of government following the election of Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
In a statement issued on Monday via X, after meeting with Speaker Meranda and other principal officers at the Lagos House in Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence in their collective efforts to maintain Lagos as a benchmark for good governance.
“This alignment between the Executive and Legislative arms will ensure Lagos remains a model of excellence in governance. We will build on past successes and work diligently to drive transformational progress across all sectors,” the governor stated.
The meeting took place amid recent significant changes in the Assembly, including the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Last week, Sanwo-Olu distanced himself from the impeachment, emphasizing the autonomy of the legislature. His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, clarified, “It is purely a legislative matter, and the Assembly handled it in the best way they could. It has nothing to do with the governor,” pointing to constitutional provisions regarding the separation of powers.
Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015 and represented Agege State Constituency I, was removed last Monday due to allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement. The decision was reportedly backed by 90% of House members.
In a viral video, a lawmaker explained the move, stating, “It is only death that is constant, so change is inevitable. The members of the House today have decided to change the leadership, as they felt we had enough of Mudashiru Obasa’s leadership.”
Additionally, the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, was suspended indefinitely, and Hon. Mojeed Fatai was elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
