Suspended Catholic priest left ministry due to loneliness, says Sister

Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe, a priest from the Catholic Diocese of Warri, has been suspended following his decision to abandon celibacy and marry in Dallas, Texas, USA.

The priest’s wedding to his wife, Dora Chichah, took place at the Streams of Joy Church on December 29, 2024, without him receiving formal permission to leave his priestly obligations.

The church authorities announced his suspension in a decree dated January 16, 2025. Signed by Bishop Anthony Ewherido and Chancellor Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, the statement cited Canon Law 1394, Section 1, which prohibits priests from entering into marriage without proper dispensation.

The document confirmed that Rev. Fr. Oghenerukevwe had incurred an automatic suspension as a result of his actions.

Recent developments have shed light on why he chose to leave the priesthood. His sister, Mary Okanatotor, revealed that he struggled with loneliness and mental health challenges, which played a significant role in his decision to step away from his clerical duties.

In a comment shared online, Mary explained, “This was the best decision for him. He had been battling mental health issues for a long time and couldn’t cope with the isolation that comes with being a priest. Sadly, we, as his family, were not physically present to provide him with the support he needed.”

Mary also clarified that her brother’s decision to marry was not done in secrecy, as he had informed the diocese beforehand. She expressed gratitude to those offering encouragement during this difficult time for the family, adding that the family stands by his decision.

Ordained on June 21, 2008, in the Catholic Diocese of Warri, Fr. Oghenerukevwe hails from a community in Ewu Kingdom, Delta State.
