The Imo State Police Command has arrested 40-year-old Uchenna Okpara for allegedly stabbing his in-law, Uchenna Unakalamba, to death following a dispute involving their children.
According to the state police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, the incident occurred on Thursday in Ubomiri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state.
Okpara reportedly attacked Unakalamba with a broken bottle after an argument escalated between their children.
In response to a distress call, police operatives from the anti-kidnapping unit arrested Okpara and recovered the weapon used in the crime.
“The suspect, Uchenna Okpara, was arrested on January 16, 2025, for allegedly stabbing his in-law to death in Ubomiri after a quarrel between their children. The attack occurred when Okpara used a broken bottle to stab Unakalamba,” Okoye said.
Unakalamba was confirmed dead at the hospital, and his body has been deposited at the morgue. Okpara remains in police custody while investigations continue, and he will be prosecuted accordingly.
In a separate case, the Imo State Police Command has dismantled a notorious kidnap syndicate in Agwa, Oguta Local Government Area.
Following credible intelligence, the anti-kidnapping unit launched an operation in a forest near Agwa on Thursday, which led to a shootout with the syndicate.
One suspect, Ozioma Dike, was arrested after the exchange of gunfire, while other members of the syndicate managed to flee.
“The operation resulted in the arrest of Ozioma Dike, and we recovered a pump-action rifle with seven live rounds and an iPhone belonging to a kidnapping victim,” Okoye said.
During questioning, Dike admitted to being part of a group responsible for multiple kidnappings in Ubomiri, Ogbaku, and Ohii communities within Mbaitoli Local Government Area.
