A deadly communal clash occurred on Saturday night in the Ndieguzu Agalegu Omege community in the Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, resulting in one fatality and the destruction of at least 10 homes.
Reports from the scene indicate that several people were injured when suspected assailants attacked the community.
The conflict is believed to have erupted between the people of Omege Agalagu and Ukwuinyima, although the exact cause of the clash remains unclear.
A local source, who requested anonymity for fear of retaliation, suggested that the violence stemmed from an incident dating back to November 2024, involving the alleged rape and murder of a woman, whose burial sparked tensions between the communities.
The source further revealed that over 10 homes were set ablaze, with properties worth millions of naira destroyed. “The government needs to intervene to prevent further escalation,” the source said.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Joshua Ukandu, stated that the altercation began with a fight between two youths from the conflicting communities. One youth from Omege was fatally stabbed during the fight and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
The victim’s death triggered retaliatory attacks from his community, with several mud huts with thatched roofs being set on fire. However, the police quickly intervened, preventing further destruction and restoring order.
Ukandu added that police officers have been deployed to the area to maintain peace, and an investigation has been launched into the clash. The individual responsible for the stabbing has been apprehended.
Prompt News reports that the situation has been largely contained, but authorities remain on alert to ensure stability in the region.
