The National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) has announced that the minimum academic standards for senior secondary education will be finalised within two weeks.
Dr Iyela Ajayi, Executive Secretary of the commission, made this announcement during an advocacy visit to the Force Education Unit of the Nigeria Police in Abuja on Wednesday.
He stated that these standards are designed to enhance secondary education nationwide, noting the important role of senior secondary education in national development.
“In October, the National Council of Education (NCE) met and approved the minimum standards for senior secondary education in this country.
”The minimum standard is going through a process of production and I want to assure you that in the next two weeks that process will be completed.
”The document will be presented to the Minister of Education, and of course we can now agree on a date for the launch, we intend to invite all the major education stakeholders to be present during the launching.
”After the launching, senior secondary schools in this country will be giving the grace of time to comply fully with the minimum standard,” he said .
Ajayi also called on stakeholders, especially the Nigeria Police, to collaborate and ensure adherence to these standards.
He assured that the NSSEC would continue supporting schools through training and retraining programmes for both teaching and non-teaching staff to improve performance.
In response, Force Education Officer ACP Ibidapo Olubiyi expressed readiness to collaborate with NSSEC in advancing education standards.
He requested that the commission extend its support to police schools, which are operated as non-profits and serve as a welfare initiative for force personnel.
“Our 28 senior secondary schools across the country are bound by law to adhere to these minimum standards, and we will fully comply once the document is issued,” he said. (NAN).
