As the World Mental Health Day is marked globally this year (2024), Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, is championing prioritization of mental health by individuals and organizations.
The World Mental Health Day is marked every October 10, globally.
Prompt News reports that the official theme of the 2024 World Mental Health Day is: ‘It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace’.
Mrs. Tinubu stressed the importance of addressing mental well-being amid rising dissatisfaction in professional environments.
In a statement on Wednesday, the First Lady said that unaddressed emotional struggles can lead to severe mental health issues.
Mrs. Tinubu thus advocated for a collective effort to create a supportive environment, both within and outside the workplace, to combat mental health challenges.
Nigerians, she opined, must remain vigilant, offer love and support, and promote early medical intervention and counseling.
The First Lady also appealed to citizens to be their “brother’s keeper,” promoting mental health awareness for a safer and healthier society.
For her, there is an urgent need to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, saying that this would encourage more people to openly discuss their challenges.
To tackle mental health, Mrs Tinubu “Early diagnosis, facilitated by open dialogue, could lead to better recovery outcomes.”
According to the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) “The Global Campaign 2024 and its initiatives are based on this year’s official theme for World Mental Health Day – ‘It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace’.
“This theme underscores the critical importance of mental health in professional settings, aligning with the founding principles of WFMH established in 1948.
“The campaign is dedicated to advocating for mental health within the workplace. Our objective is to engage a global audience—including employees, employers, organizations, and stakeholders—in grassroots advocacy to promote mental well-being at work.
“We aim to highlight the essential role of mental health in professional environments, advocating for workplaces where mental health is prioritized, protected, and promoted.”
