Victor Boniface was on target as Bayer Leverkusen defeated VFB Stuttgart 4-3 on penalties to win the German Super Cup.
Full-time scores in the keenly contested encounter stood at 2-2.
Boniface opened scoring in the 11th minute finishing from close range after he was teed up by Edmund Tapsoba.
Stuttgart equalised four minutes later through Enzo Millot.
Leverkusen were reduced to 10 men eight minutes before the break when Martin Terrier was sent off.
Boniface had to be sacrificed for a defender, Jonathan Tah after the break.
Dennis Undav gave Stuttgart the lead for the first time in the game in the 63rd minute, while Patrick Schick equalised two minutes from time to take the game into penalties.
Leverkusen prevailed in the shootout to win their third trophy in 13 months.
