A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, sentenced a bricklayer, Danladi Sanusi, to eight months imprisonment for stealing 12 bags of cement.
The defendant, 28, a resident of Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna State, was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing.
In his judgment, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel held that the prosecution had proved the offence of stealing against the convict beyond reasonable doubt.
The magistrate, however, gave him an option of N40,000 fine and ordered the restitution of the sum of NN102,000 to the complainant, Haruna Aminu.
Emmanuel stated that on the event that the convict fails to restitute the amount to the complainant, “he shall serve additional one year prison term.”
The magistrate further warned the convict to desist from the act of crime and ordered him to write an undertaking to be of good behaviour.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo told the court that the convict committed the offence on May 2 at Ungwan Rimi, Kaduna.

According to Leo, the convict, who works at the complainant’s construction site, was given 80 bags of cement to work with and he stole 12 bags worth N102,000.
He added that the convict was later apprehended after a police investigation.
He said the offense contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State , 2017.(NAN)
