An Area Court at Centre-Igboro in Ilorin on Tuesday dissolved the Islamic marriage between Halimat Suleiman and Ismaila Saadu after five children following the wife’s insistence.
The Presiding Judge, Hammad Ajumobi, made the order after a mutual agreement by the two parties.
Ajumobi said however that the petitioner must observe the three-month Iddah period, as prescribed by the Islamic laws, before she could marry again.
The petitioner had earlier told the court that the respondent was not a responsible man and neglected her and their five children for five years.
“I packed out of his house with the children for four years without his asking after them,” she said.
The petitioner insisted on divorce, saying that she would continue to manage with the children as usual.
The respondent however wrote to the court that he agreed with the divorce and custody of the children.
He further said that he would be paying N10,000 monthly for feeding of the five children and to be responsible for the children’s school fees, medical services and welfare.
