Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State on Tuesday distributed 3, 100 50kg bags of rice as palliative to vulnerable persons in three Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
The beneficiaries of the palliative included the aged and people living with disabilities in Awe, Keana and Obi Local Government Areas.
The governor said the gesture was the support from President Bola Tinubu aimed at cushioning the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.
Sule added that the exercise was in continuation of the distribution of the palliative in the state which began on Aug. 22.
He said that he had performed a similar exercise in Doma, Kokona, Keffi, Karu, Nasarawa, Toto, Akwanga, Nassarawa-Eggon and Wamba LGAs.
Sule explained that 100 beneficiaries were drawned from each electoral ward across all the LGAs of the state.
“Awe has 11 electoral wards, Keana has 10 and Obi has 10.
“Each of the beneficiary was given one 50 kg bag of rice and N5,000. Awe had 1,100 beneficiaries, Keana 1,000 and Obi 1,000 respectively,” Sule said.
The governor said he had directed the immediate payment of N10,000 and N5,000 respectively to all civil servants at both state and local government areas.
He added that the palliatives for civil servants and pensioners would last for the next six months.
The governor said that he chose to supervise the distribution of the items and cash himself to ensure that it got to deserving beneficiaries.
In her remarks, Mrs Margret Elayo, Commissioner for Special Duties, Humanitarian Affairs and Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs), said the gesture was to improve the welfare of the poor.
Malam Abdul Sanusi-Giza, Chairman of Keana, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, lauded the president and the governor for the gesture.
He explained that the support would go a long way to alleviate the suffering that the masses were going through since the removal of the subsidy.
Also speaking , Alhaji Abdullahi Omegba, the Osana of Keana and Chairman Traditional Council of Keana LGA, expressed gratitude to the federal and state governments for the gesture.
