Mrs Helen Mutfwang, wife of Plateau governor, has promised that government would focus on getting the state’s widowhood training centre to function maximally so as to equip widows to be self-reliant.
Mutfwang spoke on Friday in Jos at a press briefing to mark this year’s International Widows’ Day.
She said that the centre’s programmes would provide economic growth opportunities for the widows.
“The theme of this year’s International Widows Day – ‘Innovation and Technology for gender equality’ – is apt and timely.
“As a people, there is need to maximise innovation and technology to create opportunities for our people, particularly the widows, to participate in the economic development of Plateau.
“It is no longer news that the whole world has gone digital in virtually all aspects of life.
“The centre will collaborate with relevant stakeholders to create opportunities to protect and empower women and to also get widows out of poverty.
“We must deliberately set the stage for the acquisition of innovative digital technology for our women and expose them to financial literacy,” she said.
Mutfwang called on residents to work together to protect widows from harmful cultural practices.
She also emphasised the need to create a conducive atmosphere for the acquisition of innovative digital technology for greater participation in development.
The governor’s wife promised that widows and widowhood issues would receive prominent attention during her husband’s time as Plateau governor. (NAN)
