By Olusegun Lawrence The Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba Wednesday said he will not recognize Aminu Tambuwal as Speaker of the House of Representatives until when the case that is in court is
disposed of.
Mr. Abba, who appeared before the House Committee on Police Affairs that is investigating the invasion of the National Assembly last week by the police refused to address Mr. Tambuwal as Speaker.
The IGP merely addressed him as Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal.
The IGP had ordered the withdrawal of the police aides to the Speaker following his defection to the opposition All Progressives Congress.
Mr. Tambuwal is currently challenging the withdrawal in court.
Asked by the Chairman of the committee if Mr. Tambuwal is the Speaker of the House of Representatives or not, the IGP insisted he would not comment on that as it would be subjudiced.
“Is Aminu Waziri-Tambuwal the Speaker of the House of Representatives or not”? The chairman of the committee, Bello-Kurmo had asked.
But the IG replied, “Mr. Chairman, you know that matters before the courts are subjudice. Commenting on them is subjudice until they are disposed of.”
Irked by the refusal of the IGP to retract his statement, the committee ended the session abruptly.
Prompt News recalls that following the invasion of the National Assembly Complex by the police on November 20, the House had summoned the IGP to explain the reason for the deployment.
It will be recalled that the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal and many lawmakers were locked out forcing some of them to scale the gate.
In the process, police tear gassed the lawmakers as they forced their way into the complex.
