Augustine Eguavoen, Super Eagles interim technical adviser, has revealed why he opted for Innocent Bonke as replacement for the injured Wilfred Ndidi in his squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoffs against Ghana, reports Pnosports.com.
Bonke was not originally included in the standby list for the two-legged qualifiers, but was named as replacement for Ndidi, who sustained a knee injury while in action for his Premier League club Leicester City.
Ogenyi Onazi, who was the midfielder Included in the standby list was overlooked by the 56-year-old.
“We looked at French Ligue 1, which I think is more competitive (Onazi plays for Al Adalah, a Saudi Arabia second division club),” Eguavoen told a press conference attended by Pnosports.com in Abuja on Wednesday.
“Bonke has been playing on a regular basis for his club (FC Lorient).So, that’s why I opted for Bonke.”
The former Malmo of Sweden midfielder has been capped one by Nigeria.
