The duo of Ola Aina and William Troost-Ekong are in fine shape ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoffs against Ghana despite their lack of game time at their respective clubs, interim Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen has declared.
Troost-Ekong and Aina, two key members of the Super Eagles are yet to make an appearance for their respective clubs (Watford and Torino) since returning from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The duo, who had an outstanding tournament in Cameroon are expected to be named in the starting line-up against the Ghanaians.
Eguavoen revealed that he is not worried about their lack of playing time and is confident they are in good physical shape ahead of the games.
“They (Troost-Ekong and Aina) are physically fit and they train day in, day out, week in, week out in their teams.
“And you know one thing you guys don’t know about Europe, is that if you’re not playing in the main team, every week there is a reserve game before the main game,” Eguavoen told a press conference attended by Pnosports.com in Abuja on Wednesday.
“But people don’t know that, people think if you don’t play that weekend, you rest the entire weekend. No, you play.
” That is why some people who are to be on the bench for the first team on a Saturday, they play on a Friday for the reserve team and then they’ll be on the bench.
“So, I don’t think that’s a problem at all and mind you, it’s only two of them,” the Interim technical says.
