With the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) successfully executing two out of 14 major activities that will dove-tail to the election of the next governor of Ekiti state on June 18, 2022, the Commission is waiting for the political parties interested to contest for the governorship election to inform it of the dates for the conduct of their party primaries.
This is even as INEC has since January 4, 2022 opened the window for the conduct of party primaries including resolution of disputes arising from the primaries.
According to the timeline in possession by Prompt News, INEC has given the political parties from January 4 to 29, 2022 to conduct their primaries to enable the political parties democratically nominate candidates for the Ekiti election as required by Section 87 of the Electoral Act of 2010 as Amended.
For this reason, all eyes are now on two big political parties in Nigeria, the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to furnish the electoral umpire (INEC) the dates for their party primary elections.
The tenure of Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state will expire on October 15, 2022.
Pursuant to the provisions of Section 178 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as Amended) and (8) of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as Amended), the earliest date for the election into the Office of the Governor of Ekiti state, shall be the 18th day of May, 2022 and the latest date for the same election shall be 15th day of September, 2022.
