Gindiri Old Students Association (GOSA) has organised a 3-day free medical outreach for the host community,Gindiri, as they celebrate the 70th anniversary of Boys Secondary School (BSS), Gindiri.
The Chairman of the anniversary’s Central Planning Committee, retired Gen. Jon Temlong, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Jos to herald the week-long activities planned for the event.
Gen. Temlong said that in the spirit of giving back to the society, GOSA medical professionals had mobilised themselves to go back to Gindiri and reach out to indigent patients.
“We have professors in medicine, professors in surgery, professors in paediatrics and many other fields of medicine who are all moving to Gindiri on Tuesday and will be there on Wednesday.
“They will screen, they will operate, and on Thursday ophthalmologists would be there to look at those with eye problems,” he said.
He further said that they had three projects to commission as their intention was to make Gindiri a first class centre for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The chairman said that there were structures put in place for the STEM project.
“You would see what was done in terms of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and in the next few months, students of Gindiri schools would able to access the internet to connect to the learning platform.
“The platform is meant for them to learn on their own, link up with their teachers on line, communicate and learn on line.\
“The missionaries did their best but time has passed, if you are not update to with STEM and ICT you will be left behind and we wouldn’t want to be left behind,” he explained.
He said that they would in the course of the celebration unveil new GOSA National Secretariat.
Gen. Temlong said that Set 76 of the school had formed and named a foundation after one of their teachers to be called Derek Joy Foundation.
According to him, the foundation built its secretariat and would be unveiled alongside the GOSA secretariat on Thursday.
He said that Gindiri had raised the bar that is difficult to match by other schools in the near future by raising men and women of high standing within and outside Nigeria.
The chairman stated that as the motto of the school is “For Light and Truth” they would continue to shine the light and promote truth all the time.
He then reeled out the activities for the week-long event which he said would commence with courtesy calls on Gov. Simon Lalong, Gbong Gwom Jos, His Majesty Jacob Gyang Buba, Miskagham Mwaghavul, HRH Nelson Bakfur and the Sum Pyem, HRH Charles Dakat.
“We will thank them for giving us a conducive atmosphere to survive as a people and for the school to blossom.
“There will also be an anniversary lecture and an award night on Thursday, November 4, 2021.
“GOSA national convention to elect new leaders will hold on Saturday, November 6, and there will dinner in the evening of the same day.
“Thanksgiving service will take place in the school on Sunday, November 7,” he said.
GOSA National President, Prof. Rotgak Gofwen in his remarks, said that the story of Plateau and indeed Nigeria would be incomplete without mention of prestigious BSS Gindiri which was established in 1950.
Gofwen said that the school laid foundation for academic excellence, produced great professionals whom were making great impact within and outside Nigeria.
“The Association deemed it modest and expedient to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the school which was supposed be in 2020 but could not hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are better persons today on account of the privilege and training we underwent at the school.
“We have a story to tell and it is imperative to give back to the school that made us,” he said. (NAN)
